The match between Afghanistan and South Africa is still underway with Afghanistan having registered a target of 244 runs against the Proteas after winning the toss and having opted to bat. Team South Africa is still on the run chase, but today’s match doesn’t hold significance for the Proteas as the top-order team has already found a place in the semi-finals against Australia.

In today’s match, during the first innings, South African leading batsman, also the leading run scorer lodged a record most wicket keeper dismissals in a World Cup match. He was involved in six of the nine dismissals made today against Afghanistan and equalled Pakistan’s Sarfaraz Ahmed and Australia’s Adam Gilchrist’s dismissal records as a wicket keeper. 

Previously held records

Australia’s iconic cricketer Adam Gilchrist certainly holds the record for most dismissals in the history of the World Cup. Gilchrist played for his team for a crucial period from 1999 to 2007. He boasts of an exceptional record of 52 dismissals in 31 World Cup matches and has a tally of 45 catches with 7 stumpings. 

In 2015, when Pakistan contended against South Africa, Sarfaraz Ahmed equalled the World Record for most catches as a wicketkeeper, knocking out six South African batsmen ro register an excruciating win against its opponents in Auckland respectively.

With India being the top order team on the leaderboard, the Men in Blue are set to take on New Zealand in the semifinal round 1 of the 2023 World Cup.
