Mitchell Marsh Encourages Matthew Short to Bring Aggression to South Africa Series

With a multi-format white-ball series against South Africa on the horizon, Australia is gearing up for a series of three T20Is followed by five ODIs. As the action kicks off at Kingsmead in Durban on Wednesday, August 30, Australian skipper Mitchell Marsh has shared his thoughts on debutant Matt Short’s role and approach.

Marsh is urging Short to maintain his aggressive style of play as he steps onto the international stage. Recognizing Short’s spot in the Australian lineup earned through his aggressive approach, Marsh has conveyed his excitement about seeing Short open the batting for Australia.

Marsh stated, “(He’s) very exciting. He’s coming off an outstanding 12 months for the Strikers and Victoria last year and thoroughly deserves his place. I’m looking forward to seeing him open the batting for Australia. I’ve encouraged him to not change anything and take the game on, and we’re looking forward to seeing how he goes.”

Matt Short’s cricket journey has been impressive, with significant achievements in recent months. He was crowned Player of the Tournament in the BBL (Big Bash League) 12 and was picked up by the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for his debut stint in the marquee tournament.

Marsh also expressed excitement about another debutant, Spencer Johnson, who is expected to make his first appearance for Australia in the T20I series. Marsh acknowledged Johnson’s promising talent and conveyed his message of support to the young pacer, encouraging him to relish the opportunity.

Marsh emphasized, “From our point of view, we have no expectation; we’re excited to see a young man play his first game for Australia. He really burst onto the scene only last summer. He’s had a few injuries over the last few years that held him back, but he’s a super talent. He bowls in the mid-to-high 140s (km) and swings the ball, so my only message to him is to make sure he enjoys this. Playing for Australia is a lot of fun, and he thoroughly deserves to be here.”
