Harbhajan Singh on Shubman Gill’s Recent Struggles
Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has attributed Shubman Gill’s recent dip in form to the excessive amount of cricket he has been playing. Gill, a promising young batsman, has faced challenges in his recent performances, including scoring a mere 10 runs off 32 deliveries in India’s Asia Cup 2023 clash against Pakistan.
Harbhajan believes that Gill’s packed schedule since the start of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) has taken a toll on the talented opener. He highlighted that after the demanding IPL, players need some rest due to the hectic nature of the tournament, with constant travel and frequent matches.Despite Gill’s recent struggles, Harbhajan expressed confidence in his abilities, stating that there is nothing wrong with his technique or style of play. He emphasized that Gill’s confidence might have taken a hit but believes that given some time and rest, the young cricketer will regain his form and return to scoring runs, similar to his impressive IPL performance.
Harbhajan Singh said
“I think it is a bit too much cricket. He has been playing for quite a while now. He had a great IPL and after the IPL every player needs some sort of rest because the IPL is a very demanding tournament,” the off spinner said.
“You have got to travel and also play every second or fourth day. I feel he just needs a bit of a break. He is a quality player. There is no doubt that he will come back into form and start scoring those runs, what we have seen him scoring in the IPL,” Bhajji added.
Notably, Shubman Gill was the Orange Cap winner in IPL 2023, amassing 890 runs at an impressive average of 59.33 in 17 matches. However, his form in international cricket has dipped lately, with only two half-centuries in his last 12 innings and multiple single-digit scores.
Harbhajan’s comments shed light on the challenges of managing players’ workloads, particularly in the context of back-to-back tournaments and international commitments.
While Gill’s recent struggles have raised concerns, cricket enthusiasts will be eagerly waiting to see how he bounces back and regains his flair at the crease.
